GK Wuori comes to ALLWRITERS April 23 for Novella Workshop

CELEBRITY SATURDAY: G. K. WUORI

WAUKESHA – Embrace the wonderful world of the novella! Pushcart Prize winning author G. K. Wuori is coming to AllWriters’ to be your personal guide through the mysterious waters of those works both too short to be considered novels, yet too long to be called short stories. Learn the do’s and don’ts of novella writing from the best. On Saturday, April 23rd, AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest lecturer G. K. WUORI with his workshop, IT’S NOT JUST A PRETTY NAME FOR A CAT.

In this workshop, you’re going to explore a unique art form, often referred to as the step child of literature: The Novella. These ‘ugly ducklings’ of the writing world include a range of works too long to be considered short stories, and too short to be called novels. Yet, in spite of its reputation, the novella has recently experienced a burst of popularity, especially among the small presses, causing an interesting market to emerge for writers seeking publication. On Saturday, April 23rd, Pushcart Prize winning author G. K. Wuori will guide you through the world of the novella. You’ll learn what distinguishes a novella from a long short story or a short novel, about character and plot pitfalls that arise in the genre, and how to decide if the novella is right for you and your writing. In the April 23rd workshop, you’ll take a look at some notable novellas (The Barracks Thief, The Pearl, Infidelity, Ethan Frome, The Old Man and the Sea), discuss their special features, and engage in exercises designed to help you leave the workshop prepared to begin your own novellas.

G. K. WUORI, a Pushcart Prize winner, Illinois Arts Council Fellow, and widely-published short-story writer, is the author of the cult-classic story collection, Nude In Tub, and Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year in fiction, An American Outrage. He has also published the novellas, Now That I’m Ready To Tell You Everything and Infidelity. His latest novel, HoneyLee’s Girl, was released in spring of 2016 by Black Rose Writing. He is Associate Editor of the literary journal, Kippis, and lives in DeKalb, Illinois. More information on his work can be found at www.gkwuori.com.

Celebrity Saturdays are a great chance to broaden your knowledge of what it takes to be successful and to learn from writers who are already knee deep in an author’s life. G. K. Wuori’s workshop will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016. This event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and costs $95, which includes a lunch catered by Waukesha’s own CafĂ© de Art.

AllWriters’ Workplace and Workshop offers on-site and online writing courses in all genres and abilities of creative writing, as well as coaching, editing, and marketing services. A schedule of classes, with online registration, is available at www.allwritersworkshop.com or by calling (262) 446-0284. About the Book: A beautifully written historical fiction novel set primarily in the north woods of Wisconsin during 1920 and 1921. The narrative entwines the fictional story of an eight-year-old boy, Will, within that period's rich historic context. The story meticulously incorporates the history of logging in Wisconsin, the flu pandemic, Prohibition, World War I, and post-war American culture, specific to that time and place. Will's story reflects the challenges, hardships, and ethnic discrimination faced and overcome by American immigrants, then and now. These themes remain as relevant today as they were in 1920, and portray an archetypal immigrant experience, which is part of the proud, shared heritage of all Americans. The colorful language, rich history, characters, and Wild West atmosphere of the region will appeal to all readers.

James BastianAbout the Author: Upon graduation from Michigan State University, with a history and psychology major, Jim was a high school teacher. He subsequently converted to capitalism, earned an MBA and went on to have a thirty year business career. Writing became increasingly more appealing and the grind of business travel less so. This lead Jim to transition to writing as his vocation which resulted in the publication of his first book Wisconsin Logging Camp - 1921. His next project, also a historical novel, takes place in 1971 with an archaeological link to 1712. The title and publication date will be announced in 2016.
