ERIN CELELLO at ALL WRITERS Feb 7 2015

From the desk of Kathie Giorgio, Director, AllWriters' Workplace & Workshop LLC:

CELEBRITY SATURDAY: ERIN CELELLO

WAUKESHA – What is the one thing that will keep readers coming back? Your characters. Crafting your characters to be memorable, interesting and believable entities who inspire an emotional response, positive or negative, is the heart of any good story. On Saturday, February 7th, Erin Celello will give you the keys to creating characters who will bring your work to life. AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest lecturer ERIN CELELLO with her workshop, CREATING CHARACTERS WORTH KNOWING.

You can draft a plot that twists and turns, or conjure a truly unforgettable setting, but without richly-drawn characters, those efforts will inevitably fall flat. In this workshop, you’ll meet – or re-acquaint yourselves with – memorable characters in literature and examine what makes them tick. You’ll then look at the importance of significant details, dialogue, and research in creating the kinds of characters who are so vivid and complex, readers are left scanning the sidewalk or longing to share a cup of coffee with them. This workshop will include a series of short exercises designed to help bring your characters to life and leave an impression long after readers turn the final page.

ERIN CELELLO is the author of Miracle Beach (Penguin/NAL 2011) and Learning to Stay (Penguin/NAL 2013), as well as a PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction nominee. She has an MFA in fiction from Northern Michigan University and is an assistant professor of writing at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband, two young sons, and two unruly Vizslas. For more about Erin, visit www.erincelello.com.

Celebrity Saturdays are a great chance to broaden your knowledge of what it takes to be successful and to learn from writers who are already knee deep in an author’s life. Erin Celello’s workshop will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2015. This event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and costs $85, which includes a lunch catered by Waukesha’s own Café de Art.

Writer's Institute March 27-29

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1/6/2015
WRITERS’ INSTITUTE FEATURES NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO NETWORK AND SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS

MADISON, Wis. – The 2015 University of Wisconsin-Madison Writers’ Institute will break down the traditional barriers between presenters and attendees.

The 26th annual event, which takes place March 27-29 at the Madison Concourse Hotel, adds a Writing Mixer this year. Those attending the conference will have a chance to mingle with literary agents, publishers, and acclaimed writers. They can also get to know authors in their chosen genre at special luncheon events.

The Writers’ Institute offers attendees new opportunities for improving their craft. Instructors will conduct advanced critiques for fiction, young adult fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and memoir. They will also challenge authors to explore their skills in prose and poetry with a program called Writing Prompts.

The Writers’ Institute is the Midwest’s premier writers’ conference, allowing new, emerging, and established authors in all genres to take their careers to the next level. It offers writers practical tips for improving and selling their work, as well as a unique opportunity to make pitches to literary agents and publishers. The three-day event features lectures, workshops, book signings, and practice pitch sessions, along with the new social events.

This year’s instructors include John Dufresne, whose novels Louisiana Power & Light and Love Warps the Mind a Little were New York Times Notable Books of the Year; Marilyn L. Taylor, former poet laureate of Wisconsin; and agents from Fuse Literary, Red Sofa Literary, and the Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency, among others.

New this year is a chance for publication in the 2016 edition of the Midwest Prairie Review. The journal will print winning entries from the conference’s Poem or Page contest, which seeks entries in fiction, nonfiction, young adult fiction, and flash fiction.

“Among this year’s new networking opportunities, we will offer informal discussions of trending topics in publishing, and will also provide space for writing groups to form,” says Writers’ Institute director Laurie Scheer. “Writers should walk away from the event not only inspired and enlightened, but also with at least three new contacts.”

Poet Lisa Marie Brodsky at AllWriters in Waukesha Sat Jan 24

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From the desk of Kathie Giorgio, Director, AllWriters' Workplace & Workshop LLC:

CELEBRITY SATURDAY: LISA MARIE BRODSKY

WAUKESHA – Everyone suffers loss and hardship, and everyone deals with these pains in their own unique way. Sometimes, the most healing form of grief can be found in self-expression. After the death of her mother, Lisa Marie Brodsky translated her pain into something tangible and healing, the poetry of her collection “Motherlung.” On Saturday, January 24th, she will share her healing strategies with you. AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest lecturer LISA MARIE BRODSKY with her poetry workshop, TRANSLATING THE LANGUAGE OF LOSS.

Now standing on the other side of the grief chasm, Lisa invites you to a workshop that can help both new and experienced poets gain insight into a particular loss and untangle the emotions surrounding that wound. By reading other elegiac poems, discussing processes of writing, and sharing her own journey of writing “Motherlung,” Lisa will teach a variety of ways to find your own peace and redemption through writing. Come with a willingness to dig deep, be brave, and honor the battle wounds and scars we’ve all accumulated in order to put that next foot forward. Come translate what’s been tangled and chaotic into meaningful poetry – a balm for a hurting heart.

LISA MARIE BRODSKY is the author of “Motherlung” (Salmon Poetry, 2014) and “We Nod Our Dark Heads” (Parallel Press, 2008). She received her M.F.A. in Poetry from UW-Madison as a Martha Meir Renk Graduate Fellow in 2005. Her poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction have been published in The North American Review, Hippocampus Magazine, Verse Wisconsin, Pirene’s Fountain, among others. “Motherlung,” and its story of grief and redemption, has resonated with many and was featured in Madison Magazine, on WISC-TV, and WORT Radio. Besides writing poetry, Lisa’s passion is teaching and guiding others to their place of confident creativity. Lisa lives in Evansville, Wisconsin, with her husband and three stepchildren.
