CELEBRITY SATURDAY:
LISA MARIE BRODSKY
WAUKESHA – Everyone
suffers loss and hardship, and everyone deals with these pains in their own
unique way. Sometimes, the most healing form of grief can be found in
self-expression. After the death of her mother, Lisa Marie Brodsky translated
her pain into something tangible and healing, the poetry of her collection
“Motherlung.” On Saturday, January 24th, she will share her healing
strategies with you. AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest
lecturer LISA MARIE BRODSKY with her poetry workshop, TRANSLATING THE LANGUAGE
OF LOSS.
Now standing on the
other side of the grief chasm, Lisa invites you to a workshop that can help both
new and experienced poets gain insight into a particular loss and untangle the
emotions surrounding that wound. By reading other elegiac poems, discussing
processes of writing, and sharing her own journey of writing “Motherlung,” Lisa
will teach a variety of ways to find your own peace and redemption through
writing. Come with a willingness to dig deep, be brave, and honor the battle
wounds and scars we’ve all accumulated in order to put that next foot forward.
Come translate what’s been tangled and chaotic into meaningful poetry – a balm
for a hurting heart.
LISA MARIE BRODSKY
is the author of “Motherlung” (Salmon Poetry, 2014) and “We Nod Our Dark Heads”
(Parallel Press, 2008). She received her M.F.A. in Poetry from UW-Madison as a
Martha Meir Renk Graduate Fellow in 2005. Her poetry, fiction, and creative
nonfiction have been published in The North American Review, Hippocampus
Magazine, Verse Wisconsin, Pirene’s Fountain, among others. “Motherlung,” and
its story of grief and redemption, has resonated with many and was featured in
Madison Magazine, on WISC-TV, and WORT Radio. Besides writing poetry, Lisa’s
passion is teaching and guiding others to their place of confident creativity.
Lisa lives in Evansville, Wisconsin, with her husband and three
stepchildren.
