ABOUT THE BOOK
The Golden Fleece Awards were regular national news items generated by six-term Wisconsin U.S. Senator William Proxmire. This month, the Wisconsin Historical Society Press publishes the first comprehensive biography of the Illinois native turned popular Wisconsin politician, Proxmire: Bulldog of the Senate (ISBN: 978-0-87020-908-6, Hardcover: $28.95), by Jonathan Kasparek.

Proxmire began his long national political career as the thrice-failed Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate who won a special 1957 election to replace controversial U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. Known for championing farmer and consumer protection legislation, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and for fighting government waste --including his regular presentations of the "Golden Fleece Awards" -- the entertaining Wisconsin politician is remembered by many Wisconsinites as a friendly, hand-shaking figure at events and fairs and as a politician who spent little on his own campaigns and who voted his conscience.

Find Proxmire: Bulldog of the Senate at your favorite book retailer or online at www.wisconsinhistory.org/shop. It's also available as an e-book through a favorite e-book vendor.

EARLY PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
"This book is a masterful look at what made Proxmire tick and explains why, years after his death, he's still a true Wisconsin political legend." Dave Zweifel, Editor Emeritus, The Capital Times
