This June 1st, AllWriters' Workplace & Workshop Brings You: The Shape a Poem Makes: Shapeshifting Have you noticed that you are drawn visually to certain poems because they are interesting or appealing on the page? Have you marveled at poems that not only invite you visually to read them, but then deliver the goods with satisfying and sometimes multi-layered strategies? Have you longed to accomplish more in your poetry? Let’s examine what happens when greater care is given to sculpting the lines and shape of a poem. Some poems sparkle with originality. Some sing with musicality and lines that breathe like arias. Others have a message that moves us deeply. The shape a poem makes invites us to read it. We will examine how the use of stanzas, line breaks, indentations, and formal shaping can enhance the meaning and enjoyment of a poem. Let’s experiment with shape and form and dare to stray off the beaten path of free verse. Is it possible to open up poems and let them do things we have not imagined or allowed them to do before by shaping them in original ways? We will look at a few poems that accomplish these things and discuss strategies used. Participants will write a new poem with our discussion in mind, or revise a poem in need of invigoration, trying perhaps a new formal strategy, or adding complexity to the poem. in other ways. Christine’s collections include Tonight On This Late Road (Erie St, 1984), Invisible String (Erie St., 1989), Slow Miracle (Lake Shore, 1990), Bread Upon The Waters (Windfall Prophets, UW), The Tenderness Of Memory (Plainview, 1995), The Red Lacquer Room (Chiron, 2000), and Who Walks Among The Trees With Charity (Wind, 2005), and The Alleluia Tree (Puddin’head Press, 2012). Her newest book, Wild Fruition: Sonnets, Spells, And Other Incantations, is out from Puddin’head Press. A community poet interviewed by Poets Market 2008, she has won many poetry awards and Arts Council grants as well as recognition such as The Mayor’s Award for Community Impact, the YWCA Award for the Arts, and the Womanspirit Award and various Pushcart nominations and poetry prizes. Gardening, horses, traveling, music, animals, nature, and various kinds of love are passions that inform her work. She is a retired English teacher and Clearing instructor, who now gives readings and workshops around the country. At AllWriters’, we strive to bring you the best! CELEBRITY SATURDAY: LIAM CALLANAN      

 

WAUKESHA – Where to begin? It’s a key question for any writer, and perhaps the most important to answer well. Without a good beginning, even the best story will be overlooked. Join author Liam Callanan to learn what makes a great, or a terrible, beginning. Be it short, novel length, or something in between, every great work must begin somewhere. On Saturday, October 1^st, AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest lecturer LIAM CALLANAN with his workshop, OPEN UP: HOW TO START IN THE STRONGEST WAY POSSIBLE.

 

When we write, we need to earn the reader’s attention word by word. Nowhere is that more important than in a story’s first paragraphs. In this class, we’ll subject several examples to close readings in order to figure out what makes them work. How are characters introduced, action started, and a rhythm established, all in a story’s opening lines? The answer isn’t always noisy, but certain successful characteristics recur. We’ll read examples of those, and selected student work as well, with an eye toward crafting the strongest openings possible.

 

LIAM CALLANAN is the author of The Cloud Atlas (Delacorte, 2004; Dial, 2005), All Saints (Delacorte, 2007; Dial, 2008), and Listen(Four Way, 2015). He serves in the English department of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and was previously its chair, as well as coordinator of its Ph.D. program in creative writing. He has regularly contributed to local and national public radio. His short fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in a variety of literary journals, including Gulf Coast, the New Haven Review, Tinge (where his story was named one of the Million Writers Award Notable Stories of 2011 by storySouth), the Writers Chronicle, Blackbird,Crab Orchard Review, Southern Indiana Review, Caketrain,failbetter and Phoebe. Liam is also the creator and co-executive producer of the Poetry Everywhere animated film series.

All Writers Workplace Teen Workshops

THURSDAY NIGHT TEEN WRITERS WORKSHOP!

WAUKESHA – By popular demand, AllWriters’ welcomes high school students into our creative writing community! Teen writing is an explosive new industry, both in the areas of teen work written for other teens, and written for the world at large. Whether it’s novels, poetry, short fiction or creative nonfiction, teen work should be taken as seriously as any other, and be as well written. AllWriters’ offers professional instruction covering all genres. A full staff of traditionally published authors provides feedback, guidance, help getting ready for real-world publication, and fosters a culture of encouragement and a sense of community. On September 29th, AllWriters’ is launching a THURSDAY NIGHT TEEN WRITERS WORKSHOP!

This ten-week workshop is a carbon copy of AllWriters’ most popular and enduring writing workshops, with one notable exception; we’re welcoming high school students into our creative community! This course encourages high school writers, grades 9 to 12, of all abilities and genres, but two things are required: a genuine interest in writing and a desire to write professionally for publication. Poets, novelists, short fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers are all welcome! If you write, this is where you should be. Each week in the workshop, students present their works-in-progress to the other students and the instructor for positive and constructive feedback. Students will also receive a line-by-line edit and a thematic critique of their work from the instructor, a traditionally published author with an extensive writing resume, including two novels.

The new THURSDAY NIGHT TEEN WRITERS WORKSHOP begins Thursday, September 29th and goes through Thursday, December 8th. WAUKESHA – Expert plotting is the best way to keep readers turning pages, all the way to the end. Whether you have just the germ of an idea or a whole complicated manuscript, this workshop will illuminate for you the numerous way structure is used to achieve cohesion and will help you find the most gripping way to tell your story. On Saturday, June 6^th, Ann Garvin will illustrate the most compelling way to tell a tale. AllWriters’ Workplace & Workshop welcomes special guest lecturer ANN GARVIN with her workshop, THE MOST COMPELLING WAY TO TELL A TALE: PLOT AND COHESION.

 

Whether you are working on a novel, short story, essay, or memoir, each work must tell a compelling story and maintain the energy of that story all the way through to the end. There are lots of ways to tell a story, but expert plotting is the best way to keep readers turning the pages. Plotting also helps with cohesion, resisting the mid-draft slump and can ultimately save time. This workshop examines the numerous ways structure is used to achieve cohesion and will help you find the most compelling way to tell your story. This workshop is for writers with just a germ of an idea or a whole complicated manuscript.

 

ANN GARVIN’s decades of teaching health and studying what makes people tick proved a perfect backdrop for her novels On Maggie’s Watch and The Dog Year. Her teaching position as an adjunct in the Masters of Fine Arts position at Southern New Hampshire University allows her to marry her love of people, story, and writing and help others do the same. She is a featured writer for www.Unreasonable.is, where she writes on entrepreneurs, health, and how to save the world. Ann is devoted to helping people find health and tell their stories, and fundraises for www.girleffect.org and animal rescues. Ann, a natural storyteller, is a sought-after speaker and educator at conferences where writing, health, and human nature are discussed.

Lynne Carol Austin Reading May 2

Lynne Carol Austin will be reading from the Ten of Swords, on May 2nd, in Waukesha.

Lynne says: I will be published and released in August. Kathie Giorgio, All Writers Workplace and Workshop, is sponsoring four new authors who will be published this summer, at a reading at the First Baptist Church, 247 Wisconsin Ave, Waukesha. 7 pm. She will read also, along with poet Margaret Rozga. Free. I hope to see some of you there.

About Lynne: Her first book, Edith Ann Marie-The Sun is in My Heart, was written out of the memory of her loving relationship with her grandmother, Lena. In her book, Grandmother is the wise sage, offering sound advice when Edith Ann Marie has questions with her very concrete view of life. Sister adds a bit of drama, which is sometimes hard for Edith Ann Marie to understand.  Lynne complements the written word with her original artwork. All work is three dimensional, using hand-made paper, material, pastels and acrylics.

Lynne has been published in spiritual magazines in the Midwest throughout the 1990’s. She wrote a feature chapter in the book, The New Healers Minds and Hands in Complementary Medicine , by Dr. Barbara Stevens Barnum.” She has a story-telling C.D. called Earth Spirituality-Spiritual Storytelling.  She has lead spiritual retreats to Peru and the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. She has an alternative healing practice, the Gayatri Center for Healing, in Brookfield ,Wisconsin.

Lynne’s next book, Tell Me A Story, Mama-Little Berry and Mama Bear, is coming soon! Also watch for her children’s poetry book in the near future.
